Sasha Brown, Singer-songwriter, radio presenter for Hoxton Radio and model, Takes some time out of her busy schedule to talk to us about her latest single Parallel, and her recent collaboration with fashion designer Charli Cohen!
Please tell us about yourself or to make it easier 3 interesting facts about yourself.
Urmmmm, my brother used to have a snake. I can click my hips out of place but I was told by the doctor that I shouldn’t do that anymore and I play sax!
I’m loving your new track, what inspired your lyrics?
Thanks! It’s a reflection of where we’re at today. I co-wrote it with these guys Joe Kearns and Jason Elliot – who are awesome.
I came into the session with this word that had been playing on my mind for a while: ‘Parallel’.
Jason was saying how the world’s kinda messed up and sometimes it’s hard to feel a connection when everything feels so lost. For me, there’s a frustration behind the lyrics. It’s about a relationship. Two people are moving together – in the same direction – at the same speed but, for some reason, they aren’t able to come together.
From the outside, everything looks perfect but it’s not – there’s no connection.
You recently collaborated with a fashion designer Charli Cohen. How was this experience, and how would you put fashion and music together? So, Charli Cohen and I have been following each other on Twitter for the past couple of years. I’m very into fashion and have done some modeling in the past. After her LFW 2017 showcase, I just messaged her saying I wanted to collaborate.
I came up with a concept for the video as I could literally see it in my head. I pitched it to her and her partner, Ben Thompson, who’s an amazing videographer and director. They were on it so we got Ben’s team, PXL Post, together and shot the video one weekend!
– The shoot was really good fun. I love Charli’s designs and the team, which included my lovely model Darius and makeup artist, Phillipa Louise were all vibing so it was great!
Music and visuals have always gone hand in hand. It’s also pretty important to think about your image as an artist so yeah, I would say that fashion and music are just two pieces of the puzzle that join together!
Who is your favorite designer at the moment, and what did you think of this seasons London Fashion Week?
I mean come on, I have to say, Charli Cohen, right!
I’m also a big fan of Moschino and Chanel casual wear is my dream wardrobe but I’ll have to sell (a lot) more records first!
LFW was awesome this season. I went to the showrooms at BFC and discovered a lot of new brands I’m now obsessed with! I also went to celebrate 10 years of COS at the National Gallery and Rudimental performed which was a nice little surprise! I’ve interviewed them before for my Hoxton radio show and I’m a big fan of their music!
As a radio presenter and constantly in the ears of your audience, behind the scenes, do you dress more casually or do you always dress to impress?
To be honest, I’m all about comfort but fashionable comfort! I think that’s why I was so attracted to Charli Cohen’s designs! My friends Laura Pradelska and Lara Fraser, who also do a show on Hoxton literally wear ball gowns on their shows. They look incredible but I have to be honest, trainers are my jam.
How did you get into Radio presenting and will you stay presenting alongside your singing career?
100% I see what I do as all-encompassing. I’m a singer/songwriter/radio presenter/DJ/saxophonist and I think that all those skills compliment each other. I’m actually very excited by the fact that I’m not just a singer/songwriter because that’s a very saturated market and I have a bigger picture in mind for myself. I love everything I do so I can’t imagine giving up any aspect of it. If it’s music then I do it!
What do you have in store for the future Sasha?
Oh wow, well, a lot!
I’m getting ready to release my next single in October and then there are some exciting things happening behind the scenes so watch this space!
